Here is what I did for Julia's eyeshadow. This technique is very simple and looks great on most people. You can make it "smokier" by using darker, more charcoal-like colors. I chose a plum and light pink here.
Step 1 - Cover eyelid in the darkest dark.
Step 2 - Leave your eyelid open and bring that same shadow up past your eyelid, about halfway to brow bone.
Step 3 - Round the shadow, creating a smooth arc.
Step 4 - Use a lighter color and sweep it over the edges of the top of the dark shadow, blending the dark shadow and creating a gradient-like effect.
Step 5 - Bring darkest dark under the eye, mainly in the corners. Sweep lightest color across the lower lid to blend.
Step 6 - Liquid liner, mascara and voila!
